How To Start A Digital Marketing Career


Digital marketing is an umbrella term for all of your company’s online marketing efforts.

If you are interested in digital marketing and its business relation. You will realize that lots of businesses leverage digital channels such as Google search, social media, email, online advertising, and their websites to connect with their current and prospective customers.

I am an engineer who made a career shift three years ago and entered the digital marketing world. To be honest, it was one of the greatest decisions I have made in my life. I had to self-study online everything from the beginning. The hard part was that I needed to find a course that takes me from the start to the end. With all the free content on the internet, there will be missing parts and you will have to study from more than one source.

Luckily, I found out about Udacity; a learning platform that helps you master the skills tech companies want, 100% online, part-time & self-paced.

I started with great motivation to learn web development programming to be able to create websites and create new career opportunities, I joined the Front End Web Development Nanodegree, and after I finished it I landed my first real job in a digital marketing agency based in the US. 

I worked as a web designer creating meaningful websites for businesses to increase their sales through marketing, but I didn’t stop there, I have high energy when it comes to learning to constantly improve my skills in the process, that’s why I started my second Nanodegree which was The React Developer to sharpen my technical skills and work on web applications. 

Then I started to see the great picture of digital marketing, from websites itself to online branding assets and social media channels, all are tactics and assets that fall under the umbrella of digital marketing. Yet the best digital marketers have a clear picture of how each asset or tactic supports their overarching goals.

In these times of challenges and great opportunities, the current and future reality of learning, skills training, and work are changing! Momentum is rising towards going all digital; outreaching from personal spaces to online global scapes; merging goals and markets and opportunities. That’s where I decided to increase my knowledge of digital marketing because I had this idea that if I am interested enough in this career why not push further and start my private business. And for the third time Udacity came to help, I enrolled in the digital marketing Nanodegree and I started from the first track and I was surprised by how helpful, and professional the content is.

With the Digital Marketing specialization, you will be qualified to win your spot as a freelance digital marketer who can land big gigs anywhere in the world. Which is something I am glad I’ve achieved by working on a freelancing platform like Upwork and secure clients that would give me the chance to help them promote their services and products online.
